At East Central University, Bret is a Professor of Drama. He directs and produces plays on a regular basis.
He is also a playwright who produces his shows through the university, or other venues in the area. Bret is currently
working on a cycle of Oklahoma-theme based plays. Six shows are completed: Kindred, Homefront, War
Paint, Native Skin, The Field, and The Onyx Sky.
Type O Negative is a modern story set in an urban area. A woman invites her rival to her husband's
affections and a twisted plot of attempted murder, lies, and chaos ensues. Drama 2W. Unit set.
The Field is set in the 1950s in Lyle, Oklahoma. A widow woman is left alone to tend to her husband's
land and crops with the help of her sister and cousins. Her world is shaken when an oil lease man is shot and killed
on her property. Who killed him and why? Drama 5W/3M. Unit set.
War Paint is set in modern-day Muskogee, OK just outside of Bacone University. A Creek Indian girl
is set to try and prove herself in college, but doesn't have the identity she thought she did. Her search for her heritage
leads her to alienate others, try her family's patience, and discover love. **This play won The Garrard Play Prize from
the Five Civilized Tribes Museum, 2006. Drama 4M/3W. Unit set.
Kindred is set in the 1920s in Lyle, Oklahoma. A Creek Indian has been accused of killing two broomcorn
"johnnies" and only one man, Nathan McCoy, can defend him. The play deals with the cultural divisions and boundaries
that separate people based on race and religion. It mixes elements of the courtroom drama, gospel singing, and the Creek
language to weave its tale. Drama: 6M/3W. Unit set. **This play won The Garrard Play Prize from the

The Onyx Sky,a newly wed couple are trying to survive and learn to love one another during the Dust Bowl
period in Oklahoma. Personal relationships, family strife, and the tragic death of a brother thread together in this story.
Drama: 3M/2W. Unit set.
Homefront,as World War Two erupts with the Japanese attack of Pearl Harbor, men leave to go fight. Three
sisters, whose husbands have all joined the war, decide to live together and wait out the conflict, with personal struggles
ensuing. Drama: 3W. Unit set.
Too Many Tomorrows, spend an evening with William Shakespeare as he tries desperately to write scenes from
Macbeth. During the course of the show Shakespeare reminisces, writes his famous play, and laments the life of a
poet-playwright. Drama/Comedy: 1M. Unit set.
The Thespian, join Parker Humphries and his theatre company as they put on a Shakespearean tragedy. Parkers
son comes into town with the mob hot on his trail and the laughs begin. Mistaken identity, theatre prima donnas, and dim-witted
criminals make up for a night of fun theatre. Comedy: 5M/2W. Unit set.
Beginnings, a play inspired by Metamorphoses. The cast plays many parts as they tell the stories
of Adam & Eve, Babel, David & Bathsheba, Ruth & Naomi, Esther, and others. This is not a "preachy" play, but a
look at the humanity of these stories in mans effort to "regain a bit of Eden." This play has adjustable castingcould be played
with 5M/5W. Unit set. Drama with some Comedic moments.
The Mouth of the Lion, Dan Walker must choose between following the rules of the Presidents office, or
following his spiritual commitment. This play is an updated version of the "Daniel and the lions den" story with political
intrigue and religious persecution.Drama: 4M/4W. Unit set.
Thee & Thou, Shakespeare & Burbage are planning rehearsals for one of Will's plays--Julius Caesar.
As the actors banter back and forth, a roguish highwayman and his partner break into The Globe, he impersonates Shakespeare,
and the farce begins! Comedy/Farce. 6M/3W Unit set.
Native Skin, is set in 1918. Arty Gooch lives in New Hope, OK with his wife, Naomi. He is a
federal marshall hunting a killer who is murdering some of the local Native American populace. There is also the flu
that is sweeping through the country to be worried about. Could turmoil of the past be only clue to the killings?
Drama. 4M/3W Unit set.
On the Air!, the world of a small-time radio station in the 1940s is turned upside down when the world-famous
The Shroud radio show takes over! As the show gets close to air time, the actor who portrays The Shroud is nowhere to
be found--and then the station is overrun with Shrouds who all want to be on the air! Comedy/Farce. 4M/3W
Unit set.
Dust Bowl Letters, based on the writings of Caroline Henderson, who lived in the Guymon, Oklahoma area
during the Dust Bowl. Her writings were published in magazines and periodicals of the day to chronicle life in the area. Drama:
1W. Unit set.
The Isolation House, loosely based on the Ruby Ridge incident, a family hides in the hills and indoctrinates
themselves with "militia movement" ideology. The father pulls his gun on a judge and changes the family forever. Drama: 4M/2W.
Unit set.
Cowboyz, a series of monologues by men who represent the modern-day "cowboy." A farmer, line-dancer, gun
safety instructor, a country and western singer, and others tell their stories of triumph, loss, and humor as they deal with
an ever-changing world. Drama/Comedy: 10M (parts could be double-cast). Unit set.
